Family, 1970.

Me, Beverly, and Matt on a bike with our dad, about 1971. I could use some help with the date. Matt's more than one year old.

We lived at 103 Asbury Drive in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Guessing a date based on the fact that I started school a little after the start of the year.

I liked playing with my toy Texaco station. We weren't able to take it when we moved to Chattanooga.

My first appearance in the paper. As a non-baby, anyway.

I heard Seasons In the Sun and thought I was going to die. I had to go to a special doctor.

Watched The Night That Panicked America. A movie about Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds. I remember they unscrewed a jar in the toilet.

Influences: we got an 8-track tape of folk songs for Christmas. Turns out Folk encompasses a lot of kinds of music.

Star Wars was released in theaters.

Influences: the art of Don Martin. We stuck these sound effects stickers on our dresser and our closet door.

I helped make a commercial with Mr. Sulu. The city bus company was making a commercial starring Mr. Sulu from Star Trek, and would we like to come down to the studio and watch and maybe help out?

I saw Devo on Saturday Night Live. I liked the effects pedals taped to the guitar, though I had to ask Bruce what that was.

I saw the Rolling Stones do "Shattered" on Saturday Night Live. Our mom switched it off halfway through though.

I saw Talking Heads on Saturday Night Live. I wish I still had the More Songs About Buildings And Food album.

Kicks, Atoms Win In CYF. I think that was my only goal of the season but it was also my birthday.

I got promoted to the sixth grade. We all had to wear white, and then you have ginger ale with sherbet in it.

I heard someone say something "sucks" for the first time. It was in 1979, the summer after sixth grade.

I saw Public Image Limited on American Bandstand. We rarely watched Bandstand but we were at a friend's house.

I was walking back from soccer practice when I heard President Reagan had been shot. It seemed unbelievable, people were just walking down the street making this insane claim.

I saw Fear on Saturday Night Live. This really did seem wild at the time.

I saw Billy Squier at the Roundhouse. My first real concert.

I took the Kuder test. We all had to take it. I guess it was for people who had no dreams.

I got kicked out of a record store. Definitely worth it though.

Saw R.E.M. at Six Flags over Georgia. I think The Judys opened.

We played Fox and Hounds at Scout meeting and never found the fox. The rumor was that he hid in an open grave but I think the real answer was different.

I saw The Day After on TV. This was a terrifying and depressing show.

I was in a band called Dial A Miracle. We went through so many drummers.

I took the family car and went to see a rock show in Athens though I was underage. The Washington Post thought it worthy of mention.

Played with a Gene Simmons doll. Very unsure of the date of this.

I got in a fight outside Pizza Caesar and spent the night in the hospital. Very hard to recreate the date on this event.

Saw Lou Reed at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Drove down with Sterling Owen.

Thanksgiving Punk Fest. Punks and skinheads finally united.

Punk rock comes to Chattanooga. We started to get real DIY shows in Chattanooga in 1984.

Saw Musical Moose and Bend Sinister at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Dee tried to guess my middle name.

I worked at Taco Casa in Eastgate Mall. I got the job the day I graduated high school.

I saw the Black Crowes before they were really the Black Crowes. They were the opening band. They were pretty good.

The Red M&Ms recorded our five-song cassette, Unhealthy. After the recording my brother got picked up to go to summer camp.

I saw The Ramones at Bucknell University. I had a great time but I wore some vintage shoes and they hurt.

I worked in the dining hall in Baxter. I was called "the salad cowboy".

I lived in this not-quite-legal loft on Causeway Street in Boston. I was there in 1987. I wish I had more pictures.

Saw Bullet Lavolta and Lemonheads at Adams House Dining Hall. Pretty big show to be on the Harvard Campus.

I saw The Ramones at Williams College. I guess I traveled up from Boston?

Saw R.E.M. at Stokley Athletic center at the University of Tennessee. 10,000 Maniacs opened.

I had a lot of hair when I was in college. I'm just posting this picture because I have it and it shows my crowning glory.

Went to Regas with Katie for a birthday. This was supposed to be the fancy place in Knoxville.

Everything Tool played with Abstracts at Cityside. This had to be one of my first attempts at setting type on a computer.

Everything Tool played with Across The Yard at China King. Across the Yard were, in fact, the jangliest.

Mercyland, Anastasia Screamed and Everything Tool played at Planet Earth, Knoxville. The year is a guess. My brother and I were in Everything Tool. Mercyland was the out-of-town band. I don't remember meeting them but we had a cassette of their album in the car and we played it a lot.

I checked this War Of The Worlds LP out of the Knox County Library. I used to check out lots of records from the Knox County Library in downtown Knoxville.

I saw Fugazi at the Library in Knoxville. Lotsa hillbilly white supremacists showed up.

We played a show or two in Chattanooga. I remember this show or these shows but I really wonder when they happened.

My fanzine got reviewed. I think everybody who did a fanzine looked forward to seeing these capsule reviews in Factsheet Five.

Snake Oil's first practice. We came out of the basement to discover the Gulf War had started.

Snake Oil played Gryphons with Swell. Gryphon's was the laundry where we practiced.

All the pictures I have of my cat Jack. It was harder to take hundreds of cat pics then.

I saw The Ramones again, at the Bijou Theatre.

My college diploma, laminated. I got this in the mail from the alumni association at UT. I shoulda put a penny for scale.

Had a pretty great birthday party. Marshal Andy sang to me about cowboy heaven.

Two of my bands were on a compilation of Knoxville bands. These were the unhip bands of 1992. We were too old!

I saw American Music Club at Irving Plaza. Apparently Liz Phair was also on the bill but amusingly I don't remember that.

Saw Mark Eitzel at Acme. It was too noisy a venue.

Halloween 1993. Hallowe'en party, 1993. Dean Street and Bond, Brooklyn.

I held a baby, for the cameras. My friends had a little baby and they brought it to Brooklyn and let me hold it.

Saw Buddy Ebsen and Nick Heyward at a live taping of Conan. Apparently Al Franken was also on the show but amusingly I don't remember that.

Published Bachelor No. 1, issue 1. I edited Bachelor No.1 with Brandon Kruse and a bunch of other contributors. Any continued freshness it has comes from Brandon's incredible ink-and-brush (and Zip-a-Tone) illustrations.

I went to Italy. Very unsure of the date though.

I saw Magnetic Fields at Brownie's. The woman on drums was tipsy and giggly. Stephin Merritt looked miserable.

Published Bachelor No. 1, issue 2. This, as you may have guessed, was our second issue.

My ten thousandth day. A difficult milestone to achieve, yet it passed with little fanfare.

I went to Central Park in the fall. Date very approximate.

I co-wrote a book. I also became technically homeless while I was writing it.

We used to go to this cabin in Callicoon, New York. It had an outhouse, very rustic, but was actually in somebody's side yard.

I survived the NYC Blizzard of 1996. We saw....CB4.

Hi-Balls did a photo shoot. When they bring out the white seamless, you've made it.

We attempted to silkscreen the Hi-Balls record sleeve. We tried making the Hi-Balls 7" with a rudimentary silkscreen apparatus. (A Speedball kit.) It didn't work out.

The Hi-Balls record got reviewed in some magazines. Maximum Rock and Roll thought it was great.

Betty came to live with me. Let me tell you how I got this cat.

I saw Little Richard on Tom Snyder's show. I saw this live when it was first aired.

Stacks played Ernie K-Doe's Mother-In-Law Lounge With Final Solutions. Except...I'm not sure this show really happened.

I had a bachelor party. I guess it was lame except that I had fun.

Ernie K-Doe sang at my wedding. He did a couple of numbers with the band.

We got the strangest wedding present. If you can't tell, it's supposed to be a pelican.

I saw Betty Wright at Jazz Fest and got blown away. I'm writing this on May 11, 2020, having just heard the news that Betty Wright has passed at the age of 66. I saw Betty Wright at Jazz Fest on May 7, 2000. It was one of the best shows I ever saw.

Dirty Knives played our first show at Mermaid Lounge. We opened for The Bruisers and The Bullies.

All-Night Movers played the Hi-Ho Lounge with the Bangs and Original 3. The Bangs had a song called "Dirty Knives".

Ka-Nives and All-Night Movers played at Cafe Cottage in Lafayette, Louisiana. This was our first time meeting the Ka-Nives. The club was a coffee shop but they paid us in beer (Killian's Red).

All-Night Movers played the Hi-Ho Lounge with the Ka-Nives. The Ka-Nives said New Orleans shows were stiff and nobody came. This time they were right.

Slade and I flew to New York. Starting our first and only New York tour.

I went to Gretna Fest and saw two favorite acts on the same day. It was as if they designed this show specifically for me.

I attended a wedding in Williamsburg, Virginia. I remember hanging out in the hotel's game room, among other nice things.

MAXIMVS! played a Mardi Gras type party at Trey's house. Actually our first show.

MAXIMVS! played our first show at the Big Top. I said I would only be in the band if I could play drums. The thing is, I didn't know how to play drums.

I saw Andre Williams on Valentine's Day. Had to be at Circle Bar or One Eyed Jack's.

We built columns for MAXIMVS! We thought we really needed these.

MAXIMVS! played at the Big Top again after the Muses parade. Less than a week after our first show.

MAXIMVS! walked around and played all over on Mardi Gras day. We stopped at Buffa's and played a short set, uninvited.

i did the cover illustration for Where Y'At magazine. It's a magazine that covers events and listings in new Orleans.

MAXIMVS! played the Cave in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Part of a big fun fest called Blackbeard's Lost Weekend.

The Stacks played Lounge Lizards with The Sutures. I'm sorry, I don't remember The Sutures at all.

The Stacks played Lounge Lizards with Paradise Vendors. Paradise Vendors weren't like any other band in town, good stuff.

The Stacks played Balcony Bar with Zydepunks and Narcissy for St. Patrick's Day. We tore it up at this show to a well-oiled crowd. I also saw something remarkable on the way to the gig.

Stacks played Ernie K-Doe's Mother-In-Law Lounge with the Interlopers. Interlopers had a good new record about to come out.

The Stacks played at The Big Top with Jeremy Lyons and The Deltabilly Boys. Jeremy Lyons was really busy in New Orleans until one day he was just gone.

The Stacks played at Dr. Cliff Davis's garage again. The second of a couple of excellent garage shows.

I went to the 2005 regatta in Pensacola. This is when Trey and I came up with the Turfgrass Cup.

I attended the 2006 regatta in Perdido Bay. I'm sure we came in last.

I dreamed a trip home to Tennessee. I was in Tennessee watching the New Orleans Saints play a team I didn't recognize.

Buddy and I learned a hard lesson about discipline. In which I teach Buddy a lesson, but you know what? I learned a lesson of my own.

Couldn't sleep on Election Eve. Just like on Christmas, or the night before a big trip, I stay up too late, supposedly getting organized.

Gina and I went to the Chalmette Battlefield. I can't believe I'd never been.

Attended Goatstock at a neighbor's house. Stoo Odom was joined by a friend from San Francisco, Allison Lovejoy.

Went to a bonfire in the Lower Ninth Ward with a horse. Our friend is moving away but she had a little bonfire to let people say goodbye. And her horse came.

Saw some of Gina's work from college at the Ogden Museum Of Art. She made this in 1993.

Dreamed I had some tasks to do in Paris, France. I went to Paris with my family and boy what a mix-up.

I took a walk around downtown Chattanooga. It was a really hot Sunday, so somewhat deserted.

First flight in years. I hate flying, especially Delta. Hard crosswords help, but only to a degree.

The Stacks released the recordings we did with Andre Marquette. Andre played drums and also engineered the recording.

Found a snazzy nest in Gina's yard. Had some of the same striped tarp fiber that was in the last snazzy nest I saw.

We took the bachelor out, and Gina found a kitten. It would be a great story if they had happened in the same place.

I went to Tom and Noy's wedding. I was sure it would storm, but it turned out really nice.

Some of my art is in North Carolina. Guarded by a cat.

I went to the regatta in Pensacola but it rained. It was nice to see everybody.

Stacks played Sidney's Saloon with The Drupes. The Drupes are just great.

Saw Sunrise/Sunset at Portside Lounge. It was part of Creepy Fest.

Buddy and Otter went to the office. I guess they got tired of working remotely and wanted to get back to the office.

I dreamed I wanted to eat a basketball. It worked out about as well as you'd expect. Maybe better.

I dreamed I fell a hundred feet into the sea. I had to climb a hundred foot ladder, then stand on the top rung with my other foot on the rig to reach the part I was working on.

I found a shed snake skin in my fire pit. Which probably means there's a snake in my fire pit.

I took pictures of a wig shop on Market Street that looked about the same when I was in high school. Back then we wouldn't have felt comfortable taking pictures.

Trey and I went to Riceville, Tennessee, and stopped a couple places on the way. We went to Ankar's, which had barely changed since 1985.

I got a catfish plate at Uncle Larry's in Chattanooga.

Had lunch downtown with Beverly. Took a little tour of her office afterward.

We came home after Hurricane Ida to survey the damage. There wasn't much.

Buddy napped with me. He fell out first.

I dreamed about looking for a movie to watch. The movies weren't the ones I'm used to.

We had a big bonfire to burn up the post-Ida fallen limbs. I wanted a big fire and I got one.

I saw Julie Odell and Alex MacMurray at BJ's. I don't know why it took so long for BJ's to start putting on shows in the yard.

Our trash got picked up and we were excited about it. Gina's trash hadn't been picked up since August 25, before Hurricane Ida.

I saw Bipolaroid at Sidney's on a Sunday. Also FR and a band from Brooklyn called TDA.

We had a Monday evening bonfire at my place.

Found some dumped tires, got my labs done, got lunch, and watched a Bengals game at Markey's Bar.

I made a pizza with ricotta and basil. I was out of mozzarella.

I photographed a standing tire in the Holy Cross school parking lot. Saw this lonely tire while biking around.

I lost my leaf. Gina and I were eating breakfast at Satsuma on Burgundy Street, and she said "You have a leaf on your shirt." I saw that it was true, it was perched on my left shoulder.

I put new strings on my guitars. I watched YouTube videos and now I don't know how to put the strings on anymore.

I had a solo bonfire. Still getting rid of Ida debris.

Gina went to City Hall and sent me a picture of a map.

A raccoon tried to crash our bonfire.

Saw a house fire in the neighborhood, on Caffin Avenue.

Saw Quintron and Miss Pussycat in Arabi. The cops shut it down, it's a peaceful neighborhood.

Our lodgings were across the street from a neglected cemetery. I climbed through a lot of briars and such to get up there and look around.

My mom got out some old family photos. I didn't have a scanner, this was the best I could do.

I'm 20,000 days old today. I should have planned the party a little better.

Golden Ray practiced. Recorded for the sake of an uncaring posterity.

I saw two movies last week.

Gina and I visited Holt Cemetery again. It's one of the most interesting places in New Orleans, though I guess you could say that about every graveyard.

I dreamed I went for a walk in my tube socks. I was walking on a slushy Brooklyn Street.

We went to the Michael Aaron/Billy Ding Memorial in Bywater. I knew and liked Michael a lot.

I got some dwarf bottlebrush shrubs for Gina. The lady who sold them looked at me like I was too dumb to care for a plant.

finally finished this painting of a Unimog. The more I worked on it the simpler I made it.

Golden Ray played a house party on Magazine Street. We were supposed to play on the front porch but some lady freaked out.

Gina and I played analog Wordle. I had misplaced my phone but it was Wordle time so Gina set me up with the analog version.

I tested negative for COVID. I guess I got the symptoms for nothing.

We saw Whiskeybutt.

We had a great return to Mardi Gras. I hurt my foot though, and couldn't really walk the next day.

Happened on a train-trailer collision in Arabi.

Went with Gina to see Lonnie Holley at the Music Box Village.

Went with Gina to the Bon Temps and played pool with friends from Florida.

Gina and I visited with Ben and Kathleen. I tried on Kathleen's Mardi Gras mask.

Went for a bike ride with Gina. We went about ten miles.

Buddy brought home a friend to play. I caught and released the friend.

I dreamed I went to a gun shop in the mall.

I took pills that made my dreams feel very real.

I had a late summer fire. Nature decided to come in the house.

I dreamed I saw a sandpiper try to eat a frog, and other things.

A cat slept in my bed. It wasn't my cat.

I painted a typical man.

I hung out with Happy Talk Band and other friends at Pirogue's.

I've been walking two miles a day now for a week.

Notes for September 9, 2022: I kept up my two-mile walks for another day.

I went to a bonfire and sat with a dog. Early November, cool enough for a bonfire.

The first cold day of the year.

I saw St. Lorelei at Siberia. Very good band, soon to be replaced for some reason.

I did a new painting, of a critter saying "Aah". Aah not pictured.

Buddy relaxed on the work table. Buddy looks like he's thinking about work, but, like me, hes mostly wondering when lunch is.

I took a picture of Daisy. We would go on walks and I would give her quarter-pound balls of hamburger meat.

I visited Splash 'n Chill island. I spent the weekend of the Fourth in Pensacola.

Can I still call myself a painter?

Did my once-a-year poster design. I had just one day to do it so, if you find it derivative of my early works, maybe that's why.

Dreamed: a trip to a thrift shop. I was an adult, basically present-day me, but I was starting a new school and I had an advisor, and we went to the mall.

A few words about Dexter Romweber. If you go listen today, please note how a lot of it is garage/rock/rockabilly, but a lot of it isn't.

I just need the exact date something changed. Is that so much to ask from a computer? The computer could easily tell me the exact date, but the people programming the app want it to seem friendly.

Shadow was camouflaged on the roof of my car. She lives down the street, but she eats food here.

Buddy let me see his cloudy eye. Buddy finally let me get a picture of his cloudy eye.

Got a picture of Buddy and Otter being friends. Gina always said they're more like frenemies, but look at this.

Buddy and Otter watched out for me. Buddy has already accepted that whatever happens is fate. Otter, on the other hand, never learns anything.

Saw a bird I couldn't name while walking on the levee. I think it's a Missisippi Kite, but maybe it's too big for that?

I saw another mystery kite in the same place as yesterday. I took another walk on the levee this afternoon, and once again there was a kite being flown by no one.

I saw the band Omni at Siberia. Bands from Atlanta aren't usually as audience-friendly as these guys were.

Went to see Sunrise:Sunset at Siberia.

A snake made itself comfortable in front of the house. They're overall harmless but they will bite. Mostly they're good at getting away.

I dreamed I went to a remote cafeteria.

I compiled a little booklet of my karaoke cartoons. It's 24 pages, staple-bound. Laser printed on, let's see... 20lb copy paper. Good stuff. It's black-and-white, but so are the originals.

Stacks played with Happy Talk at Checkpoint Charlie. Excellent crowd, excellent sound.

I got a big order of Japanese pens. I love these (mostly) cheap Japanese pens. I have a few too many.

I saw Echo and The Bunnymen at the Joy Theater. The band went on at least thirty minutes late, leaving us to just stand there while a stagehand tuned the guitars about thirty times.

I dreamed I went to a beautiful courthouse. Everything was nice and clean, everyone was nicely dressed.

Buddy has glaucoma and melanoma in his eyes, but he'll be okay. Close to a month after I took this picture, Buddy got a diagnosis. He has glaucoma in his left eye (the one to the viewer's right).

Last picture of Buddy with his left eye. This was so sad, and a dreadful time for us.

Buddy had surgery to remove his left eye and to remove melanoma from his right eye. It was a scary and sad time but he'll be all right.

Buddy rested, three days after his eye surgery. Buddy's acting more like himself, in that he's lying on the bed instead of under it (something he never did before).

Buddy healed after his eye surgery. He seemed to feel so much better after having his eye removed.

Buddy got in the bass drum again. He looked pretty comfortable in there.

Buddy continued to heal after his eye surgery. He really refused to wear the cone at this point.

Buddy got home from surgery very groggy. Basically he couldn't stand up yet right after the surgery.

Buddy thought a package of books was food. It sounded like food.

We waited for Hurricane Francine. This one knocked our power out for a day.

I found an adolescent possum in my kitchen. I opened the front door and turned out the lights, hoping she’d be brave enough to leave before Buddy came home (though he has no interest in possums, no play value).

I went walking on the levee and snapped a sympathy card-worthy sunset.

Saw the sunset from the Mississippi River levee. Sunsets seen from the levee are more dramatic when there are clouds in the sky but I felt like taking pictures anyway.

I repaired my old red guitar. For a guitar that was basically in the trash it's starting to look like an instrument somebody cares about.

I'm very disappointed about the election, and how the media lied to us and made us think Harris had a chance. Apparently the Harris campaign thought that instead of motivating the base they could get fifteen million Republicans like this one pictured here to stand in line to vote Democrat.

I drew a karaoke of a man singing The Spy Who Loved Me. Baby, you're the best.

I dreamed I went back to college in New Hampshire.

I drew a karaoke singer I was really pleased with. Not many people could identify this song, but that's not my problem.

Buddy went out in the snow for the first time in his life. It snowed in New Orleans. I let Buddy out in it.

I watched the Super Bowl halftime featuring Kendrick Lamar. There was an ad on the Super Bowl about Chevron drilling in the "Gulf of America" and I was too disgusted to leave the TV on.
