A Guide To Austin Pavement Markings

For some reason, a lot of the sidewalks in Austin are signed by their makers. I had always thought putting in sidewalks was a public function, but apparently Austin hires contractors who are really proud of their work. Or maybe the city needs to know who to blame if things go wrong. At any rate, there's often a sort of brand pressed into the the pavement near the corner.

The most common of these by far says "MAUFRAIS". I've seen a couple of variations on this one (one's a bit rounder and cruder than the other). But Maufrais wasn't alone. Here are some photographs I took of Austin pavement markings either downtown, near the University of Texas campus, or my neighborhood (known as Wooten; it's near W. Anderson and Burnet).
