Can you write about someone who is different from you?

I just learned that Ezra Jack Keats was not black. My mind is kind of blown. It doesn’t change how I think about his books, I don’t think, but I’m sort of glad I didn’t know that when I read them. But I basically imagined and admired an author and artist who was not as I imagined. It speaks to his skill and his ability to keep his self separate from his subject, I suppose.

In any case the art speaks for itself.
