From the fairly delightful fifth edition of Dog Care & Keeping (if you look at the cover) or Care Of The Dog (if you go by the title page), copyright 1954 (originally 1940) by Will Judy. He gives other interesting advice like “DON’T treat your dog as a sissy or disgust him inwardly with baby talk,” and lets us know that “Raw meat and gunpowder do not make dogs vicious nor does milk cause worms.”
The author also has his own rules about spelling, that are sensible; he has no time for ‘-ough’ constructions, so dog owners may be ‘thotless’ and a dog runs ‘thru’ the house. And a dog also has an ‘esofagus’.
So, while I don’t have a dog, you can safely leave one with me; I have the manual. (And I won’t shoot anybody’s dog with tear gas or throw buckets of water in Fido’s face.)
